JULY’S PIES

It’s hard to believe that it’s already July. That means that the local Norfolk County summer fruits and vegetables are becoming available. It also means that the cottages, trailer parks, golf courses and provincial parks are open, so I will get to see my customers from there after a long winter. So a big welcome back to those of you who are my seasonal customers.

July starts off with celebrating Canada Day, did you know that this holiday was originally called Dominion Day until October 27, 1982? It’s origins are from 1879 when federal law made it a statutory holiday to celebrate the anniversary of our confederation. I love Canada, I have travelled through a lot of Canada, driving as far as Nova Scotia one way and also from B.C back to Ontario. The landscape is so picturesque, the people are friendly and I believe that is what makes Canada so great. I do wish we had summer weather year round, and that our evergreens were palm trees, but that’s just my personal preference. So Seeing how I love Canada and Canada has a few foods that known as Canadian, I decided to highlight them for the full month of July. Let”s take a look at the July’s month long highlighted pies.

USING LOCAL NORFOLF COUNTY PRODUCE

Photo by Tabitha Mort on Pexels.com

When I create my pies I look at what is in season locally. Norfolk County Ontario is a great area full of farms to gather the freshest items. If you want to get a good idea of what next months specials will be keep an eye on out for what is in season here. (hint for the monthly contests) I truly feel blessed by the bounty of local produce options, often they are organic. Did you know that every egg I use is from local free range chickens? Supporting local is even more important at this time as so many local places have been faced with hard times because of covid 19 restrictions. It actually makes me feel good to help boost my local economy, and often they are my neighbors and friends. We all should be doing our part to keep Norfolk County the great place that it is. Farming is not easy work, yet without them we would not be able to eat, and much of our economy and the beauty that makes Norfolk County such a great place to live, shop and enjoy. I hope you will support local and support me.
